Flora Japonica, the fine art of flower arrangement
The Flora Japonica collection of Tokyo Design Studio is inspired by Dutch botanical gardens growing new plant species brought back from Japan: thus, it is about exploring and admiring Japanese flora in all its beauty. Among the floral decorations in this collection are the Japanese maple with heart-shaped leaves, the katsura, one of the most beautiful ornamental plants of Japan, and the ginkgo biloba, a plant that dates back to very ancient times, since it appeared about 200 million years ago. Finally, among these wonderful plants you will find some decorated enchanting dancing cranes. Flora Japonica, where East meets West
Creative contamination between Japan and the Netherlands dates back to between the 16th and 17th centuries, when Dutch porcelain began to be imported from the countries of the East. Blue Delft ceramics, now famous all over the world, has been produced by the Dutch in the city of Delft since the 16th century. This porcelain was very fashionable among the wealthiest families until the 1800s, who habitually showed off their collection on every occasion. As time went by, Delft Blue pottery became so popular, it influenced the artistic creations of Japan. Tokyo Design Studio’s Flora Japonica collection aims to celebrate these cross-cultural exchanges and add a new chapter by giving a unique European touch to the traditional pattern and to Japanese tableware design.

How the Flora Japonica collection is made.
Most of our products are made in Japan through product processing using a technique perfected over the past 400 years. Our creations are fired twice, decorated with one color at a time, then glazed and finally fired one more time. The process is controlled with meticulous attention which ensures that every Tokyo Design Studio product is of the highest quality.
